Yesterday we conducted our second Local Government Legislative Review/Update. It was successful on many accounts, but first, the details… Duration: 2 hours Registered: 84 In attendance (online): 413 Presenters: 12 (Wall, Wunsche, Markham, Bluestein, Crowell, Ducker, Welty, Fairbanks, Whisnant, Hughes, Youens, McLaughlin) Avg. presentation length: 7.5 minutes Faculty Lead: Aimee Wall Program Manager: Carolyn Boggs This webinar takes a closer look at some of the more significant new legislation of interest to state and local government officials, now that the North Carolina General Assembly has adjourned for the year. It was a logistical challenge getting 11 presenters in and out of position at the appropriate times, but everything went smoothly. Aimee Wall, did a fabulous job creating the agenda, wrangling presenters, compiling presentations, AND hosting the webinar. Presenters made interesting presentations, each prepared handouts, and to their credit, all our presenters stayed within their allotted time which protected the time set aside for Q&A. Clients regularly rate the Q&A periods as strong points of our webinars. Due to the nature of legislative updates, and rapid-fire short presentations (avg. 7.5 minutes each), this webinar featured little audience interaction outside of Q&A. Still the sessions are highly regarded for the purpose they [...]

Some time ago, David Ammons was asked by conference organizers to provide a short (30 second) promo for one of his Benchmarking presentations. David generated the script and provided some basic visuals. Greg Whisenhunt recorded David’s narration in the soundbooth, added some graphics and animated the final piece. The end result is a flash file which can be easily embedded in webpages and blogs.
For those of you who enjoyed Ann McColl’s Constitutional Tales series as much as I did, Nancy Kiplinger shared Ann’s recent website announcement with me…TLS was instrumental in helping Ann create media for, and refine many of her original tales. -Joel G. ————————- February 15 is not just President’s Day. We might think of it as “Constitutional Right to Education” day. And to celebrate, I want to share with you the launching of the website for Constitutional Tales. Why today? Because on February 15, 1868, Reverend Samuel S. Ashley introduced on the floor of the North Carolina Constitutional Convention an amendment to the Declaration of Rights. That amendment articulated education as a fundamental right of the people of this state. We continue to benefit from his bold action as it became a foundation for our North Carolina Supreme Court’s interpretation of a right to an equal opportunity to a sound, basic education. I invite you to go to http://constitutionaltales.net/ and see what engages you in the initial offering. You might be interested in the video clip from the State Capitol presentation on the Freedmen’s Convention and the contributions of African Americans in the pursuit of free public schools. If you [...]

Indigent Defense Education Faculty: John Rubin, Whitney Fairbanks, and Alyson Grine Program Manager: Meredith Murray Events: Indigent Defense Education Type: Narrated PowerPoint: recorded during live presentation Tools: PowerPoint, Adobe Presenter, lavalier microphone Date: Fall 2008-ongoing Clients: Indigent Defense Link (view sample):Involuntary Commitment Process Objective: Make Indigent Defense training available for clients unable to attend live sessions. Challenges: Recording sessions live in class. Equipment requirements and setup. Capturing audience responses and questions. Description: The School of Government’s Indigent Defense Education (IDE) wanted to better meet the needs of their audience and stay abreast of changing technologies and advancements in communication. As so many of their programs consist of relevant, timely, and essential information for indigent defenders, the IDE group initiated a Narrated PowerPoint project, to help disseminate information more broadly to their clients. Many North Carolina indigent defenders are unable to attend their trainings due to space constraints, their work responsibilities, location, travel budgets, etc. In order to cater to a larger audience IDE is offering this means by which their clients may receive training regardless of their ability to physically attend. Although there exist myriad methods and channels by which to disseminate information over the Internet–including traditional video webinars, straight [...]

DSS Attorney’s Conference Webinar Faculty: Janet Mason Program Manager: Jessica O’ Sullivan Event: 2009 Winter Conference for Social Services Attorneys Type: Webinar (Adobe Connect Pro) Date: February, 26, 27 (1.5 days) Clients: 24 online; 75? local Link (view sample): Day 1–Morning Session Objective: Make DSS attorney conference available in a satisfactory format to remote clients unable to travel to Chapel Hill . Challenges: Simultaneously present to local (SOG) and remote audiences. Give remote participants equal ability to interact with local audience (ask questions and share comments). Allow remote participants to hear local audience comments and questions. Description: Janet Mason received inquiries from several clients requesting a means to attend the 2009 Winter Conference for Social Services Attorneys remotely. Travel budget restrictions would have otherwise not allowed them to attend. Janet and Jessica contacted TLS mid-December 2008 (i.e. not last minute) to start discussing what options would be available for the February event. Videoconferencing and simple video recordings were eventually ruled out for various reasons, and it was decided to attempt a live simultaneous event with the face-to-face (f2f) conference. The online event received a unique course code, and course marketing, pricing and registration was identical to the f2f event. Expectations [...]
