Improve your Presentation Visuals–free campus workshops

The UNC Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) announced a new series of workshops on visual literacy.   The series of sessions will expose you to a wide variety of image and media collections, and media tools available at UNC.  It also covers the pedagogical, legal and technical issues that surround the use of copyrighted materials in your courses–both for your traditional face-to-face courses, as well as your online webinars and elearning modules.

Using Visual Media

February 25 | Thursday

12:30 P.M. – 1:30 P.M., House Undergraduate Library, Room 205

Winifred Metz, Media Librarian & Heather Gendron, Art Librarian will provide an introduction to using visual media effectively in teaching.

They will also present visual media collections and tools available at UNC.

March 18 | Thursday

12:30 P.M. – 1:30 P.M., House Undergraduate Library, Room 205

Digital Copyright Specialist William Cross will provide an introduction to the legal issues involved in using images and visual media in the classroom.

He will discuss copyright law and compliance as well as fair use, statutory exceptions, and student privacy.

Digital Video

April 1 | Thursday

12:30 P.M. – 1:30 P.M., House Undergraduate Library

MRC Digital Media Lab Media Lab manager Greg Klaiber will lead a hands-on session in the lab, offering instruction on how to incorporate digital video in your lectures and classroom presentations. He will also cover creating a clip for use in your class and posting your video online.

VoiceThread: Multimedia Projects Made Simple

April 15 | Thursday

12:30 P.M. – 1:30 P.M., House Undergraduate Library, Room 124

With UNC VoiceThread (http://voicethread.unc.edu), students and instructors alike can easily create narrated slideshows from existing images, video clips, and documents and share them with a group. Members of the group can easily contribute annotations to the slideshow with text, audio, video or digital ink. In this workshop, we will explore how UNC instructors and students are currently using VoiceThread as an effective teaching tool, as well as how to create and manage VoiceThreads.  Facilitated by Suzanne Cadwell, CFE and ITS Teaching and Learning

VISUAL LITERACY (Series Overview)

Incorporating images, film, and other media into the classroom encourages students to question what they see, watch, and hear and develops their critical thinking skills. The following series of sessions exposes participants to a wide variety of image and media collections and media tools available at UNC. It also covers the pedagogical, legal and technical issues that surround the use of copyrighted materials in a classroom that has become as much digital as physical.
